After installing the Cars game on my Dell Inspiron w/Win XP v. 5.1, Service
Pack 2, I can't start the game. I keep getting the "cars.exe has encountered
a problem and needs to shut down" message.

Is this one of those situations where you just end up waiting until someone
creates a patch, or is there somewhere I can look to see if it's my system
that's the problem?

Any and all help is MUCH appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi Michael White,

The following applies to most games in general, and not just to the games that
may be listed in the KB Article refered to in this post.

SYMPTOMS:

When you start or play any one of the games that is listed in the "Applies to" section, you may experience one or more of the
following symptoms:

..The game stops responding.
..The game quits unexpectedly.
..The computer restarts unexpectedly.
..The game encounters an error and needs to close

Additionally, you may receive the following error message after you receive the Gathering Exception Data dialog box:
<Game Name>has encountered a problem and needs to close.

RESOLUTION:

Method 1: Restart your computer by using a clean boot procedure
Method 2: Remove and Reinstall the Game
Method 3: Adjust graphics hardware acceleration
Method 4: Disable AGP Texturing in the DirectX Diagnostic tool
Method 5: Temporarily disable the sound card in Windows
Method 6: Lower sound acceleration
Method 7 : Download and install the most recent version of DirectX
Method 8: Update your video driver
Method 9: Update your sound driver
Method 10: Scan your computer for viruses
Method 11: Remove spyware
Method 12: Install the latest VIA chipset drivers
Method 13: Create a new user account in Windows XP
Method 14: Change the compatibility setting

Thanks a lot Jimmy. I'm trying each of the suggestions. Nothing yet.

I'll post if I find the solution.

Thanks again.

I have read that you may have problems playing downloadable games with
service pack 2 installed. this may sound crazy, but try uninstalling service
pack and then installing the game.

I have had the same issue and we have purchased two versions of this game
from Target. The details of the error message I receive say "Error
Signature" and goes on to list a series of version information with all 0's.
Not sure if this is relevant. I too have suspected my video card, but don't
know what is installed on my computer and can't verify this.

Hi sed,

Here are a few ways to identify which video card you have
installed on your computer.

1. Click Start / Run / type: dxdiag
Click the Display Tab
Look under Device for the name and manufacturer

2. Click Start / (Settings) Control Panel
Click Display
Click the Settings Tab
Click the Advanced... button
Click the Adapter Tab

3. Click Start / Run / type: msinfo32
Click on the + Components
Click on Display to see the name on the right

4. Use Belarc to see indentify your Video, Chipset and Motherboard:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download1385.html

5. Get the information from the manufactures website (or store)

6. Look on the Video card itself if you plug into a card, or

7. Look in your Motherboard manual if you plug into the
on board video built into the motherboard of your computer.

Hope that helps you identify the make and model of your video card,
and afterwards, Try updating your Video drivers using these steps:

Hi vwbrewer,

Most have had good results, but it would be safe to assume
that their issue was not exactly the same as yours. Go ahead
and start your own thread, and we'll see if we can help you. :-)
