Private Folder Access problem

Good day all, thank you ahead of time for trying to help
me with this.

Here is the problem:

I had an IBM HD with XP home on it and had my
normal "Documents & Settings" folder which contained my
main user profile. Within that folder, it had my
applicatoin data settings (Identities, etc), my favorites
folder, email setings ,etc..

Unfortuantely my HD crashed due to a phyisical problem.
I setup a new HD and was able to slave the old one, and
lucikly am able to see some of the data. I can see my
old "Documents and Settings folder from the old HD and
Windows XP install, however here is where the problem
hits.

When I try to access the old HD and user folder, it says
Access denied. I am able to see the properties but it's
set to "Private Folder" and since I cant boot to this old
HD and into windows...i cant seem to change it off of
private folders. I remember when I setup my old XP
install, it asked if I wanted to make these private and I
said yes. So Im assuming it locked them down in my old
registry somehow.

My question to you all, is there anyway I can get into
that old User profile (Documents and Settings) folder?
Anyway to override the private folder somehow?

Thanks for taking a look, I sure hope I can salvage all
of my old settings, favorites, email settings, etc.

Regards,

Darrin

The following article describes how to take ownership of a file or folder
to which you have been denied access:

Thanks Carey for the help.

Unfortuantely the article you referenced had great
instructions...but a part of it wont work for me.

I'm unable to boot into safe mode with my damanged IBM HD
connected (even as a slave device to my new HD or CDROM).
Everytime it tries to enter safe mode (my new HD and
install of XP Home)...it hangs at a dos screen trying to
load drivers.

To confirm it was my old HD causing the problem, I
disconnected it and try to enter save mode and did so
with no problems.

So, is there another way to change the ownership without
being in safe mode...or do you have any ideas on how to
get my dang IBM broken drive stop hanging when trying to
enter safe mode?

Thanks,

Darrin

Hi

SubInACL is maybe an option::

subinacl /noverbose /file \\server\share\dir /setowner=whoever
subinacl /noverbose /subdirectories \\server\share\dir\* /setowner=whoever

New bug fixed version of SubInACL is available for download...
