Printing to JetDirect via IPX from XP

T

OK, here's my problem:

I connect to my company via vpn, and want to be able to print to my
home printer. This hangs off my home network via a JetDirect box,
which supports TCP/IP and IPX printing. I can't use IP (vpn precludes
this), but can I use IPX? I know nothing of this protocol. How do I
set up a printer?

I found out about adding in the NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible
Transport Protocol and binding it to my XP connections. But how do I
then address the printer?

the JetDirect also supports DLC/LLC and Ethertalk (!)

Sorry for multiple group postings, and any help much appreciated.

Well, you can try installing an IPX stack and tweaking the printer driver to use
it. HP's Install Network Printer Wizard is not a bad tool to use. Frankly,
everything I once knew about Novell Netware and IPX I've now forgotten, so I
can't suggest how to set it all up.

Netware (IPX), DLC/LLC and Ethertalk are all old protocols, rarely used any
more.

You have a software VPN? If the IT people in your company can't help you to set
it up to access your printer, how about installing a second Ethernet card in
your computer? The VPN ought to work with specific Ethernet cards, and you
should be able to set it up to use only the Ethernet card which accesses the
internet. Ethernet cards are cheap these days... Ben Myers

Hi Ben:

If my memory still serves me, you can do the following:
set up your jetdirect box to use IPX. It may ask for a
network ID, make it 0000000001 (all zeros and a 1).
Set your PC up to utilize IPX/SPX NWLink protocol. This is
Microsoft's implementation of IPX/SPX protocol to run with
Novell Netware. Check out the properties on this protocol,
again the network ID is the same as noted above.
For starters, leave all the defaults on the protocol
properties. Bind IPX/SPX to your nic.
Test the printer by sending a print job.
Again, I believe you can get a printer configuration
printed out thru that box (It's an old one, isn't it?),
which will show your config for the printer i/o.
You probably also need to set up DLC.
Again, just add it to the ject direct box's list of
enabled protocols.
Let me know if it works. If not, I can find you addt.
info. But need to know what type of HP J.D. box you're
using.
Good Luck.

What are you wanting to print from? Terminal Services? If Terminal Services,
have your admins set your account up to autocreate your printer on the
server once you connect.

Hey there.

What you are trying to do is easily accomplished and works
reliably once configured. I have the exact same scenario
and have used this setup for years. Now the bad news - I
can't tell you how to do this just now. Last week, my hard
disk crashed and has been replaced. I have been struggling
to remember how I set this up in the first place.

The basic approach is to activate IPX/SPX from the local
network properties for printing services. Next, you bind
this protocol to the printer. Currently, I don't see this
option anywhere which leads me to believe that my IS guys
installed a stripped down set of network utilties on my
machine.

If you sort this out, please post and I will do the same.

Good luck!

OK here seems to be part of the answer - you don't get the ability to
create an IPX port with Windows, even if you bind the NWLink
IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol to your ethernet
connection. However, if you install and run the << HP Install Network
Printer Wizard >> from here just copy that into Google - the url is
too long to paste here, you'll get HP Standard IPX/SPX Port as an
option, when you go to install a new printer, and specify Local
printer, without automatic discovery.

However, while I can get this to work on a machine other than my work
pc, that one still eludes me. The wizard reports errors. Any
thoughts, anyone?
