Printing from command line?

Hi all,

I have two machines that are exactly alike.
Both have XPHome and have an HP printer
attached. Both print fine from inside
Windows graphical. But if I do a run ->
cmd and get a command prompt, one of
them prints out after I do the following and
the other one doesn't:

C:> dir > lpt1

Something must be different between the
two but I can't figure out what.
No error messages. Just another command
prompt.

any ideas?

Maybe one printer is connected to the parallel port
and the other to a USB port.
