I just connected my old Canon BJC 4300 to my new Dell which does not
have a LPT printer port, using a parallel to USB adapter. The printer
keeps turning on intermittently and the internal printing head moves
back and forth and then shuts off which involves more noise. Why does
this happen and can I shut it off?

Probably because parallel-to-usb adapters don't work very well. If your
Dell is a desktop and you want to keep the old printer, buy a PCI
parallel card instead. They are inexpensive and it will work
consistently. This assumes of course that you have XP drivers for the
Canon.
