Printer Sharing

I have a laptop running Vista and PC running XP. Wireless connection via
router. I want to share the printer currently attached to the PC. I have
enabled all printer sharing devices, enabled sharing in all firewalls. The
printer is shown on the laptop as "ready", but whenever I try to print
everything goes into queue. And the only way I can get it out of queue is be
stopping the spooling. Both PC/laptop have same computer names and same
workgroup names. Any ideas why printing only goes to queue and does not
print?

I just came here to post the same question almost word for word. I have an HP
CLJ 1600 printer connected to a Vista Business PC via USB and shared. I am
able to install the network printer fine on my XP Media Center laptop but
when I print to it the job hangs in the queue on the vista PC. I have had
lengthy discussions with HP support but they refuse to support it in that
configuration. They keep saying "This is a host-based printer". Whatever - I
have never had trouble sharing your host-based printers in the past. They say
the problem lies with Windows and I should come here for help. I am also
printing over a wireless network. If anyone is able to succesfully print in
this configuration, I'd love to hear from you.

Thanks,

Glad to hear I'm not the only one. Been on several "discussion" groups in MS
and still cannot print. My printer is an HP psc 1210 all in one. Other
discussion people suggested I go to the printing, etc. forum but have yet to
get any answers. Hopefully soon someone will read these posts and answer.

Try installing it as a network printer in the following manner....

Instead of using the name of the computer and the printer, use the TCP/IP
address, followed by the name of the printer.

Or install it as a local printer, then change the address as above.

I tried installing both ways and get an error message that says it cannot
detect a printer. The printer is turned on, etc. Any other ideas?

I tried printing and in the printer dialog box it says "printing", but
nothing is after about 10 minutes. Should I be doing something else. One
thing that did work is it seems that I can now share files, etc., but
printing still seems to be a hang-up!! Thanks for your help

I did change the names as you mentioned. I also updated the drivers on the
printer from the XP machine (thought maybe this was the problem). Now on the
XP machine listed under installed printers is the printer with the name from
the Vista that is also shown on the Vista laptop. However, when I try to
print, it just sits there, doesn't do anything and the only way I can get the
document off the printer is to cancel the spooling. Any further help would
be greatly appreciated.

OK I got both ip addresses then went to the main computer and typed in ping
with the IP address of the other computer. It said packets sent 4, received
4, lost 0. Then I went to the laptop and typed in ping with the address of
the main computer, and again got the message packets sent 4, received 4, lost
4. So I tried to print and once again the document shows "printing" but is
not actually printing. Have tried to delete, but again just sits with the
message "deleting" and nothing is happening. Any further ideas would be
GREATLY appreciated.

This is a PS to earlier message. Since I "pinged" on both computers I am
having a hard time getting on this website. It took me almost 10 minutes to
get to this page. I don't have dial up so it usually only takes seconds.
Did I do something that would cause this to happen?

When I went to the HP website, they said I should (at the cmd prompt) type in
ping 192.168.173.1 and they said it would then sent three signals to the
printer to see if there is a wireless connection. When i tried this i got 4
packets sent, 0 received, 4 lost - 100% loss. Sound like this means anything
to you????? Just trying anything to see if this will work. Maybe it's just
that my printer is too old (about 3 yrs old) Thanks for any help, it is
really appreciated. The other thing (slowdown) must have been a "GLICH" in
my internet service - all's well now.
