Printer listed but cannot connect

Guest

I am having a problem with my XP machines. I have created shares and they
show up in the directory, but when chosen, I get an error that they are not
connected (even though they are). The machines are connecting to the domain
via VPN, XP firewall is off, file and print sharing is checked on both the
Local Area Connection and VPN. Security on the share shows the "everyone"
group allowed to print (plus I cannot connect even as administrator).
Please help!

Hi Eddy,

Thanks for posting here.

From your post, my understanding of this issue is: you have shared a
printer on AD, but when you choose it from XP workstations connecting to
the domain via VPN you get an error. If this is not correct, please feel
free to let me know.

This seems to be a complicated issue, and we need more information for
further assistance:

1. Please let me know whether this is a network printer or a local printer.
If it is a local printer, do you connect it to a XP workstation or a
server OS?

2. Please let me know the detailed error message verbatim.

3. If you try to connect the printer in the LAN, do you get the same error?

4. If you can visit the printer in the LAN, it seems that the issue is
related to the VPN connection. If so, have you configure Offline Files or
Folder Redirection for the XP workstations?

Hope this helps! I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Have a nice day!

Sincerely,
Tom Che

1. Local printer connected to workstation. Trying to access from another
workstation.

2. Windows cannot connect to the printer. Either the printer name was typed
incorrectly, or the specified printer has lost its connection to the server.
For more information, click Help.

3. Printers shared on the LAN work. I don't see anything strange about the
VPN. The printer shares using the VPN works on Windows 2000 machines without
a problem.

4. Would you mind explaining why offline files or folder redirection would
matter? We do not allow offline files do to the nature of the business. There
is no folder redirection occuring on the computers in question.

Is there a specific XP setting I should be looking at in terms of file and
print sharing besides enabling it on the VPN and/or LAN?

Thanks for any help.

Hi Eddy,

Thanks for your reply.

When you configure Offline Files and then use VPN or other remote access,
there may be known issue which cannot access the shared resource. Since
you are not using Offline Files, certainly this is not related to your
issue.

I have found some similar issues - only XP cannot access shared printer via
VPN, and most of them were caused by firewall or black hole router, since
you have disabled firewall on both side, I recommend you may try the
following method:

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious
problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft
cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using
Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Enable PMTU Black Hole Detection on the Windows-based hosts that will be
communicating over a WAN connection. Follow these steps:
1. Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
2. Locate the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\tcpip\parameters
3. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry
value:
Value Name: EnablePMTUBHDetect
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 1
4. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

I would like to make one more note that we are not going thru any VPN. This
printer share and workstation are n the same LAN. Also, i discovered that
when I go to command prompt and do a net use to connect to the ptnt share it
CAN !. Also , I can connect ot he file shares on the same server with no
problem. It's only connecting to the printer share from windows.
