This question might be more suited to the Terminal Services board, but since
I'm not completely familiar with Windows administration, I am not certain
that it would be more applicable there. I will post it there if I do not get
a response from this board for a while.
Scenario:
My client uses Windows 2003 Server and Window 2003 Pro on the desktops. The
desktops have Epson thermal receipt printers hooked up to them. Users
connect to the Windows 2003 Server via RDP connections to utilize an
application which prints to the receipt printers.
The printer driver for the receipt printers was installed on the server and
the clients. When users connect, they can see their printers. However, an
option 'Enable bidirectional support' is turned on by default at the server
side (ie: if the user logs into a remote desktop connection and checks their
printer properties, it is turned on). We have found that if this option is
not turned off, print jobs end up, well, disappearing. They never make it
from the server down to the client. To resolve the problem, we either log in
for the user (using their password - not desirable) and change the setting,
grab their printer when connected as admin to the Server via RDP and adjust
the setting (cumbersom b/c we must target each user individually), or walk
them through changing the setting by connecting to a RDP session w/o starting
the target app (again, not desirable b/c we prefer to have people only use
RDP for this application.)
What's Desired:
It would be great to have something like a policy which would change this
setting automatically upon logging in, or connecting the printer, or creating
a new user account.
Any suggestions? I attempted to determine what is changed when the option
is flipped (registry key, INI file, ???), but was unable to find it. Maybe I
wasn't looking in the right place - not sure if it's a printer driver setting
or a port setting.
