"Printable Area"... (Anybody...?)

Howdy,

I posted this three days ago, but thus far have no response.
If you might be able to assist, please give it a try:

I am working on something in Word 2002 SP3 that relates to
One-Up Mailing Labels printed on an impact printer (an OKI.)

I noticed that there were some difficulties relating to the
layout of the label, and so I tried to modify the margins in
Page Setup.

They would not stick because my modifications violated the
"Printable Area" specification of the label template I was
using.

The label size is a "Custom Form" for the printer and it was
my understanding that such specifications were in the Server
Properties of the printer itself. But when I looked there,
the Printable Area was set (as I wished) to include the
entire label.

If not from that Server Properties setting, where is Word
getting its "Printable Area" specifications, and how can I
modify 'em?

Many thanks,

I believe Word pays attention to what is in the printer driver (which is
resident on your computer) and not to manual settings on the printer. If the
printer is actually capable of printing to the edge of the paper, the printer
options should allow you to select borderless printing (or some such).

On my Canon color inkjet, I have to get past a warning that this is not
recommended on standard paper, but it will let me set it up. I don't know
how it works, as I've only used borderless printing on pictures.

Hi Pam,

I too thought that Word got its information from the printer
driver, but...

It is in the driver that I have the margins set to zero. (My
apologies if my earlier description sounded like I modified
settings on the printer itself.)

I just checked them yet again, and all four margins of the
custom form I use (a 4X2 label) are set to zero.

Still, Word wants to "correct" those margins with the
familiar error dialog telling me that I am attempting to
print beyond the "printable area."

Thanks for any further thoughts,

Use a larger size "paper" in Word and set the margins on that so that the
pritable area coincides with the area on which you want the print to appear.

Hi Doug,

That clever suggestion may do just what I need...

Many thanks,
