The close down message asks me to turn off the print spooler. What is it and
how do I turn it off?

Hi Mitch,
Spooling is the process of first storing the document on the hard disk and
then sending the document to the print device. You can continue working with
your program as soon as the document is stored on the disk. The spooler sends
the document to the print device in the background.
To turn the spooler off,
Double click Printers and faxes on the Control panel
Click your printer and select "set printer properties".
Advanced tap
Select "Print directly to printer" click Apply and OK.
Rgrds,
