Print Spooler won't start; dependent on lexbces.exe but that won't start either; So why?

Windows XP Home SP2
I have two Lexmark printers installed (or at least I used to).
Actually, I have the Lexmark folders in Program Files, but the
printers don't seem to be installed anymore. The printers are
Lexmark 640 series
Lexmark 2400 series
They pretty much worked until just now.
In the Printer and Faxes folder I only see the Add Printer and nothing
else.
When I try to start Add Printer, I get an alert saying the Printer
Spool service isn't running.
When I go to (run) services.msc , I find that Print Spooler is
stopped. (It's stopped and) It won't start because it depends on
(Properties > Dependencies) LexBce Server, which apparently is
Lexbces.exe located in
C:\Program Files\Lexmark 640 Series\Drivers or actually that's where
Lexbce.ex_ is 149 KB. What does the underscore mean on the end of an
exe (replacing the final e)?
Anyway, in C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers
\w32x86\lexmark_640_seriesc231, there is LEXBCES.EXE size: 304 KB .
lexbces.exe also exists elsewhere:
LEXBCES.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool
\drivers
\w32x86\3
304 KB
LEXBCES.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool
\drivers
\w32x86\lexmark_640_seriesc231
304 KB
LEXBCES.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool
\drivers
\w32x86\lexmark_z600_series73d8
296 KB
When I try to start it by double-clicking on it, a command or DOS
window opens briefly and then closes. Task Manager shows the service
is not running.
So how do I start the service lexbces.exe , so I can start the service
printer spool, so I can print?

Hi!
They pretty much worked until just now.

It sounds like their drivers have become corrupted. Have you tried
uninstalling and reinstalling each printer's software?

I would also recommend using the latest available release of printer
software you can get. Download a fresh copy from the Lexmark web site.
What does the underscore mean on the end of an exe (replacing the final
e)?

That's a Microsoft compressed file. Such files are compressed with the
utility known as COMPRESS and expanded with the unsurprisingly named EXPAND
command-line tool. All recent releases of Windows have this tool if you want
to expand the file.

Windows will also expand these files when it needs to, usually during a
setup operation.
When I try to start it by double-clicking on it, a command or DOS
window opens briefly and then closes.

The program you are trying to run may simply not be intended to be run
directly. Some programs will print messages to the window you saw, but it
goes away so quickly that you cannot tell for sure. Try opening a command
line and running the program from there if you are curious.

It really sounds like you need to uninstall and reinstall your printer
drivers.

I followed step 16
"
key the command
sc config spooler depend= RPCSS
(note the space after the = but not before) "
And it worked in a sense. The print spooler is there. But the printer
still didn't work so I tried to uninstall and re-install. I seem to
have un installed all right but when I tried to re-install the last
part of the install failed. I didn't get the confirmation notice that
the install was complete and the installation just stopped. This guy
seems to have had the same problem with a different Lexmark
http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/186929-solved-print-monitor-unknown.html

When I try to add printer the result is a failure and the message: The
specified print monitor is unknown.

The other guy who had the similar problem, Ding28, ran System File
Checker (sfc) and re-installed windows.
That may be difficult. This is a Compaq PPresario V2000 laptop that
didn't come with an installation CD. I kinda wonder if that was
necessary too.
I may try sfc. I don't see how it could hurt.

By the way, my other printer the Lexmark 2400 now works. However, I
need to use the 640. I need to print on the back and the front. The
2400 doesn't align both sides well.

Try this fix:
run devmgmt.msc, Ports(COM & LPT). select the printer port, e.g. ECP Printer
Port (LPT1). Port Settings tab check the 'Enable legacy Plug and Play
detection'

I uninstalled and then I rebooted. I forgot I had the add new hardware
set to automatically add, which it did, but I doubt it was the
software I downloaded from the lexmark site.

I suppose I should try again? Uninstall via Add and remove programs >
disable add new hardware automatically > install the downloaded
software.

I crossposted this to Newsgroups:

I can't find Ports, except for USB.

I've tired to uninstall and reinstall a few times now with no success.
I keep getting the message:
"An error occurred during the installation of the device
The specified print monitor is unknown."

As I said, I now have the 2400 printer working. So the problem has to
be with the 640 software. I'm going to start a new thread regarding
"specified print monitor is unknown." I don't know what that means,
and so far searches haven't helped me.
