Print spooler slows application startup

Recently on an XP PC I have had the problem of applications - especially
Office - taking a considerable time to start up when a dadt fill is clicked.
If the print spooler is stopped the probelm goes away but comes back as soon
as the service is restarted to print something. Any ideas ? Thanks
