print spooler is not running

I have an intermittent problem with attaching a network
printer to a laptop running XP. Printing to an HP
laserjet printer for four days. All of a sudden no more
printing and the following:

Error: print spooler is not running

Used computer management to determine the spooler service
was running, stopped it then restarted. Still no luck.
Tried a reboot with no luck

Any tips would be appreciated
