Print Servers - Protocol Order

If a print server supports multiple protocols is there a specific order
it uses the protocols in or is this down to the connecting computer.

I assume that Windows networks use their own protocol and I understand
that Linux and Mac use IPP, so what of RAW and LPD etc.

Windows does not uses their own protocol. Windows uses the protocol
that the network printer driver installs. Most of the time it seems
to be a LPD or HP NP settings. No order is used in a multi-protocol
print servers. It is a "first come first serve" which means that the
first protocol the printer server "sees" then that is the protocol
used. However, this depended on which protocol is "active" since some
print servers can have various service selectively enabled.

I thought Windows used its own protocol as used in network neighborhood
when networking between MS machines.

That makes sense, I've been playing with samba and CUPS. My network saw
the printers using the normal Windows network but I set up another entry
using ipp.
