print jobs constantly getting stuck in queue with hp psc 2110

I recently purchased an HP PSC 2110 printer which I installed with Windows XP Pro SP1

Very often when I try to print something (even a test page or from notepad), the document gets stuck in the print queue

Here is what shows up in my print queue
Document Name Status Owner Pages Size Submitted Por
Test Page Printing Jon Harris 2/1 76.2 KB/76.2 KB 5:40:04 AM 08/02/2004 USB00
Test Page SYSTEM N/A 294 KB 5:40:04 AM 08/02/200

It always shows 2 jobs like this, and sometimes the first one (Owner: Jon Harris) shows the size as being only partial (ex: 75.9 KB/76.2 KB

deleting the SYSTEM owned job works fine, but when I try to delete the first job, its status changes to 'Deleting - Printing' and won't budge

I am running the latest HP Drivers (version 2.1.0), and have also tried their basic driver (version 3.1.1) I have tried everything else under the sun, including a clean re-install of windows, disabling startup programs, turning off power management on the usb port, changing the USB cable, and telling the printer to print directly to the printer instead of spooling

I am quite sure this isn't a hardware problem since I have tried 2 different psc 2110s on 3 different computers, and the problem persists

The only solution I have found is to restart the print spooler service, after which the jobs usually print

Interstingly enough, the printer seems to work fine after the print spooler service is restarted, and subsequent print jobs do not seem to get stuck until after a reboot

I hope someone out there has a solution, the HP customer care people are stumped

Cheers
Jon.

I've tried all of the HP utilities.

As I have already explained, I have tried both versions of their drivers, which is pretty much all they offer.

The only conclusion left is that a) there is a bug in WinXP, and b) there is a bug in the HP Driver.

HP claim that I am the only person they know having this problem, and that it must be a Microsoft problem.

For completeness, here is a list of all of the things I tried to get the printer working (many were suggested by HP support staff):

re-install windows xp professional and service pack 1
returned the psc 2110 and got a new unit
changed the USB cable to an HP 6 foot cable
performed full and partial resets on the printer
printed self-tests on the printer
plugged the psc 2110 into different wall outlets, without power/surge bar.
made sure to only plug-in the psc 2110 when prompted by the installer
re-installed hp all-in-one drivers (version 2.1.0) (both from CD and HP website)
used HP scrubber tool to ensure proper uninstall
installed basic hp driver 3.3.1 (from HP website)
disabled startup items in msconfig
removed all usb devices from the computer (except the psc 2110)
installed latest BIOS update for Asus A7N8X-E DX Motherboard (Nvidia NForce2 Chipset)
installed latest USB drivers for Asus A7N8X-E DX Motherboard (USB 2.0)
disabled 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' in Power Management of USB Root Hub Device entries
Tried plugging the printer into various different USB ports on the computer
Tried changing the port the psc 2110 prints to to DOT4_001 from USB001
Tried changing the advanced psc 2110 option to 'Print directly to the printer' from 'Spool print documents so program finishes printing faster'
Installed the printer on two other computers with motherboards based on VIA and ALI chipsets respectively
Tried installing the hp 990c driver (HP's generic printer driver used for trouble-shooting).
Deleted all files in c:\windows\temp\

Thanks, I looked at the forum, unfortunately the hotfixes suggested there are only for win2k and I'm running winXP

Yes, I have tried the uninstall util from HP (it's known as the 'scrubber'), I used it when I was trying different versions of the hp driver

Is there any way to debug the interactions of the HP printer driver with the Print Spooler Service? It would be nice to see if the HP driver is somehow causing the spooler service to misbehave. (nothing is showing up in the event viewer

I am forming the opinion that the problem is likely to be
Windows XP - not HP, etc. Why? I have hte same problem
as you. Please read my post and then the thread.

Subject: Adobe Acrobat 6, HP Laserjet 2100, and Windows
XP Pro
From: "Paul" <[email protected]>

Hi,

I'm using Adobe Acrobat 6, HP Laserjet 2100, and Windows
XP Pro (SP 1). The drivers for the printer have been
updated. Acrobat is also current.

When I make a PDF file using Acrobat, I can make the PDF
successfully. But, afterwards, I can't print on the
Laserjet. No matter what I do, I can't delete the job
from the queue. I need to reboot and let the printer
print. The job remains in the queue after rebooting. When
it prints, I always get one extra blank page.

What's going on, and what should I do?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Paul

I had seen the bidirectional fix before, although it is only listed as a fix for certain hp printers, and for win nt

I tried unchecking the 'enable bidirectional support' option in the ports tab of the printer driver, but the jobs are still getting stuck in the queue. I will try re-booting the machine to see if this option affects the print spooler service at startup, but I am not very hopeful..

Any other suggestions

Thanks

I just noticed something that may or may not be relevant

If I restart the print spooler service before printing any jobs, the print jobs don't seem to get stuck anymore...?! I've tried rebooting a couple of times, and in each instance, restarting the spooler prior to printing caused documents to print successfully

The only thing is that the jobs seem to move out of the queue very quickly (i.e. 9 page document clears the queue after only 2 pages are printed)... Not a big deal really, unless I wanted to cancel before it prints all 9 pages. Is this normal

Thanks
Jon.
