is there a way to disable the print dialog box in XP

What dialog box are you talking about?
The one that comes up every time you print something, telling you that
your document was sent to the printer? That dialog box is a result of
installing XP SP2. Assuming you have recently installed SP2, here's
what you need to do in order to turn that dialog box off:

Goto 'Printers and Faxes'
Without selecting a specific printer, Click on the 'File' Menu
Select 'Server Properties'
Select the 'Advanced' Tab

Uncheck the box that says 'Show informational notifications for local
printers' if you're printing to a locally attached printer

or

Uncheck the box that says 'Show informational notifications for
network printers' if you're printing to a network attached printer.

That should do it.
If you're talking about some other sort of dialog box, please be more
specific.

I have tried that as well, but no joy.

turn off the tray icon

You can configure the Taskbar to hide any tray icons

Right click on Taskbar / Properties / Click Hide inactive icons / Customize

Look in the Past Items for the printer icon. Select it and chose Always
hide

Good idea, but it doesn't seem to make any difference on XP SP2.

Is there a registry location for it, perhaps?

*Quick note for the lurkers*
Having the dialog box on is a *good* thing. Now malicious scripts in
webpages can't force your printer to print without the dialog box popping up
first. However some application environments require this facility to be
disabled. Hence this thread.
