Primary Slave drive disappeared after updating to Windows XP

A friend updated his operating system from Windows 2000 to Windows XP
Home. After the new OS was installed, with related chipset drivers,
the hard drive on the Primary Slave drive does not appear in the
root directory. It does show up in Disk Manager but instead of
indicating "Online", it reads "foreign". He had first installed the
XP OS with Win 2K and the computer could be started with Windows 2000
or Windows XP. When the computer booted to Win 2K the second hard
drive was visible and was accessible. But when booted to XP it was
not in the menu tree. I performed a "clean install" but the second
hard drive is still not visible in the root directory. The Primary
Master is a Western Digital WD800 and the Primary Slave is a Samsung
SP120N3. According to the Samsung website there are three versions of
this drive, with varying jumper settings. The drive is set to "Slave"
as per the diagram on the hard drive. This hard drive was in the
machine, and working, when the operating system was Win 2K. All of the
backup data is on the Samsung drive.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Jim Sims
