Preview pane vs displayed e-mail

I am receiving responses to an e-mail I sent on which I BCC'd some of the
recipients. In the preview pane, I can see the reply they sent to me,
however, to the right, where the e-mail itself is displayed, I see only my
original message. I do not know how to view the entirety of the message they
sent to me because when I open the message in a new window, again, I see only
my original text. What settings do I need to change or what am I doing wrong?

Yes, I can see that there is a message from the recipient in the 3 line
preview pane, but I do not know a way to access the rest of the message from
them because it's not in 'actual' e-mail if I open it. (Incidentally, I used
Ctrl+Shift+8 and nothing happened. Is this supposed to work in Office
Outlook 2003?)

Version of Outlook? When you say "preview" do you mean the 3 line preview in
the message list?
If you press Ctrl+Shift+8 do you see the message?

Apparently some messages get marked with hidden text and ctrl+shift+8 shows
it - it should work in outlook 2003 if the text is marked hidden.

Are only certain messages affected? Can you read them if you hit forward? Do
you scan email with an antivirus scanner? (disable it if you do)
