Preview pane in the Open File dialog box

A friend and I both have Word 2003. When I try to open a file, "Preview" is
an option in the Open File dialog box (under the "Views" button). This is not
visible on my friend's computer. How can she make it visible?

Hi Tom,

If you're on Windows Vista the 'thumbnail' choice at the bottom of the File=>Open dialog may be what is needed instead of the
preview view, but for a document to have a preview the document would usually need to have the File=>Properties choice for 'save
preview picture' enabled and that can increase the size of each document.

Bob, I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing. I'm using Windows XP,
and when I choose "File" | "Open" in Word, I can click on the "Views" button
in the "Open" dialog box 's toolbar and my choices are: Thumbnails, Tiles,
Icons, List, Details, Properties, and Preview. There is also a "Web view"
choice, but it is disabled. When Preview is selected, the dialog box splits
and a preview is visible on the right half whenever I select a Word document
on the left side. This works regardless of whether the Word document has its
"Preview Picture" property enabled or not. When my friend clicks on the
"Views" button "Preview" is not a choice -- not even a disabled choice. I
can't figure out how to get that choice to appear for her. Tom

Hi Tom,

Is your friend also on Windows XP or on Windows Vista?
Is she using a home computer or is this a corporate network installation perhaps?

Note that the Preview option is (to my knowledge) available only in the Word
File Open dialog, not in Windows Explorer. Perhaps your friend is trying to
open the file from Windows Explorer and not within Word?

Also, in the Word File Open dialog, if you right-click an open area and
choose View, Preview is not one of the options; it is available only from
the Views menu in the dialog. Perhaps your friend is using the shortcut menu
instead?

See http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/PreviewPicture.htm for a discussion
of the pros/cons of previews generally (and for screen shots that might help
your friend see where to click).
