Prevent users from moving folders

Hello,

We are having an issues with users moving folders in our
organization. They would be searching for files, and
would inadvertantly click and drag a folder into another
folder. Is it possible to prevent a user from moving a
folder, but still retain the ability to read and write to
it? The folder is located on a Quantum SNAP Server with a
mapped drive letter. Other folders are located on a
Windows 2000 Server running Active Directory. What
permissions do I need to adjust to dis-allow moving of
folders?

Thanks!

A modify or full ntfs permission is needed to move folders. You may need to
use ntfs advanced/special permissions to accomplish what you want. When you
use special permissions, a user/group can have more than one entry in
permissions by using the "apply onto" permissions option for specific
objects [folder, files, subfolders, etc.]. --- Steve

Steven,

Thank you for your rapid response. I have another
question. If I allow Create/Write permissions, and deny
all others will this solve my problem? There are no
subfolders in this case so Traverse Folder is not an
issue. Otherwise, would I be able to allow Read/Write
and deny Modify?

Thanks!

Just having create/write will not work since read and others are needed. You could
try adding deny permission for the two delete settings just for the folder in the
apply onto drop down list. Or you could try giving users list/read/execute
permissions on the main page which would be for folder, subfolder, and files. Then in
special permissions you could give users the equivalent of modify permissions for
subfolder and files. Be sure to test results. I rarely get it right the first
ime. --- Steve
