Prevent predefined words from being hyphenated

I work with documents in which auto-hyphenation is turned on. I often come
across certain words that I would like to remain un-hyhenated.
I have read some of the questions and responses in this forum and came to
the conclusion that it is not possible to prevent predefined words from being
hyphenated other than to go through each document manually and dehyphenate
them. In other words, one cannot draw up a list (or custom dictionary) with
words not to hyphenate.
Can some-one please verify this statement?

It might work to add all the words, with a "no-proofing" character style
applied, as formatted AutoCorrect entries.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. My understanding is that Autocorrect only
works as one types, and not on exisitng text. In my case, I prepare a
newsletter from articles sent to me which I then just copy and paste into a
template with justified newspaper style columns.
Since posting my question, a colleague suggested creating a "dehyphenation
macro"
based on Find & Replace together with the Format/Language/"Do not check
spelling or grammar" facility. This macro will obviously have to be extended
as one goes along.
When adding the words not to be hyphenated to my Autocorrect list, the
Replace with "Plain text" and "Formatted text" options are greyed out. How
does one make them active?

When I select any text to which direct formatting (including a character
style) has been applied, "Formatted text" is available. But I agree that
this would not be helpful for existing text. Certainly, using Replace to
apply the No Proofing style would work, however.
