Preservation of font attributes

I often create Word documents with alternating fonts. One line of the document will have a certain font and the second line will have another font. This is required as I need to explain certain lines of a document individually either over the original line or, in some cases, under it. I need a different font or size of font as the case may be to make differentiating the lines easier when reading the document. Sometimes I need the different font in the middle of a line of text but usually it is alternating lines

To understand what I need to do, think of a language translation document. Example:(Yugoslavian
(what are) (you) (working on?

I'm not doing language translation but the application is the similar. I often need to insert a common item in multiple locations. Whenever I copy and paste said string to where I need it to be, Word automatically changes the font, size and attributes like bold/italic etc. of the item I copied to conform to the existing font and attributes within the area where it is inserted. This costs me a lot of time in editing. How do I preserve the font and size when pasting? I do not want to have to go back and re-format all the pasted items again since I already cut or copied them in the format that I need. Actually I wish to change this on a global level so that it affects every Word document I work on. I can't seem to find any information in help or in the menus. My version of Word is 2000

Thank you for your time.

You should be using styles for this. Trying to preserve manually-applied
character-styling is troublesome at the best of times, and it commits you to
extra work for ever if the document is going to get revised.

Define one style for your keyline and another for your tag line (or whatever
you call them); and if you want to get slick, record macros for applying
those styles, and attach the macros to custom toolbar buttons.
