Preload Images

General question: Should I always preload images, no matter if I am using
rollover effects or not?

Thanks.

Beverly,

What time of day is it in Texas?

It is 5PM Sunday here in Eastern Australia

I also have faced the question of preloading, as my site has lots of images.
A recent posting here addressed this. It appears to be a tradeoff.

From what I read, if you want all images available so that rollover has
little (or at least less) delay, then they should be preloaded. But if you
want less delay when first loading the page, then don't preload.

I preload all my images - at least I think I do. I have set up code
according to what I have gleaned from this NG, I just trust it works. I have
256KPS broadband and there doesn't seem to be too much delay. But when
executing my slideshow I get status messages re downloading before each
image, which I thought should not happen if they are preloaded.

Can you let me know what code I should use, and I will check it against what
I do use

The only time preloading images is advantageous is when you are using them for rollovers.
Other than that, in my humble opinion, there is no advantage.
Additionally, ( also in my humble opinion ) the script needed to preload them adds un-needed
"weight" to the page.
