Since the last group answers to my post about prefetch, I have observed my
prefetch folder for changes. These are my observations:
1.. layout.ini is updated approximately every 24 hours unless some program
that is not in the prefetch list is accessed or if defrag.exe and
dfrgnfts.exe (or dfrgfat.exe) runs.
2.. defrag.exe and dfrgnfts.exe run a little over every 3 days. The
minimum time for me was 3 days and 15 minutes. The maximum time was 3 days
and 12 hours.
3.. My file list grew to 130 before the older files were deleted. This may
have happened on the third boot after 130 but I could not verify that. The
list was reduced from 130 to 34 with most of the files no more than 7 day
old. However, 2 files are still dated mid November.
That is enough looking at prefetch for me. It looks like it is working.
Thanks to Alex Nichol, Wes Vogel, Icgonitus for their answers and giving me
the hints of what to look for.
Now like Mikie advised in his post, I can get on with my life. Maybe I will
do something worthwhile like watch grass grow.
