PRC service will not start

I was installing a verizon air card with venturi server accelerator suport.
After rebooting, the machine is very slow to reboot. I can look at the
services running and rpc says starting but after timing out it gives me the
same message it would as if it were the blaster worm. I have tried scandisk
with no luck. I can not get to the system restore function without RPC
running. I can do very little without RPC. I could not even reinstall the
upgrade. RPCSS.DLL is there and appears to be the correct version. I really
do not want to have to reload this laptop from scratch. Please give any
direction that you can. It is running xp pro SP2. Thanks in advance

I tried this and did not work. It takes a very long time at the "Windows is
starting up" screen as it does when loading normally. I assume it is trying
to start rpcss.ddl even in safe mode. It tells me "system restore in not able
to protect your computer. Please restart your computer and try again." Let
me know if there is anything else I can try. Thanks again

It told me "system restore not able
to protect your computer. Please restart your computer and try again." It
stayed at the "starting your computer" prompt for a long time before getting
to the logon screen. This was starting in safe mode with command prompt. I
am afraid that it is trying to load RPCSS even in safe mode. Let me know
what else I might try. Thanks

I am not sure if this article will help or not,

"Could not start the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service. Error 1058" error
message when you manually start the Remote Procedure Call service

I am sure that you have tried starting Windows in a clean boot environment
without success.

And that all I can do for you. You may want to perform a repair installation
of Windows XP.
