ppt vs pps

My Powerpoint offic xp will only open *.pps file and not
*.ppt

please advise

What version, what happens, and do you get any error messages?

In addition to Glens comments, are you first opening Powerpoint and
then using the file open command, or are you double-clicking on the
ppt file icon?
