is there a way of applying custom animations to individual components of a
single smart art graphic? i have found that an animation applied to the smart
art applies only to the graphic as a whole and can't be set individually for
each component of the graphic. is there a way out?
 
This is the way:
copy your smartart
Then paste it as special/wmf
then ungroup it twice

Yes, there is a way:
-Apply your custom animation to the Smartart
-In the custom animation window, change the effect options, Smartart
animation to one by one.
-This ungroups the smartart and you can apply different animations to each
part.
