PPT 2007 Custom animation task pane is not active

I have been working with ppt 2007 all week with no issues. Today however,
when I click on the custom animation button, the task pane pops up, but it is
not active. The animations button above it is also inactive. I want to know
what I did wrong and how do I fix it. Thanks...

cmsamn,
Excuse me for stating the obvious, but you do have an object selected when
you activate the task pane?
