PP unable to insert MPEG Video file.

Hi

I get this error when trying to insert a Standard 2Mbit MPEG-1 Encoded file.
"PowerPoint couldn't insert movie from the selected file. Either the file is
non-standard, or QuickTime is not installed properly. "

Am I shure it is not a quicktime movie ? YES I'm shure !

The movie plays fine with the Windows mediaplayer but crashes the mplay32
(Windows MCI player)( Start->Run->mplay32.exe))

The movies inserts fine on a newly installed system with Powerpoint so it
must be a installed program on my system that overrides the MCI settings
(since PP uses MCI controlled player and not Windows Mediaplayer for media).

I have tried edeting the win.ini and system.ini as descrived in these
articles but with no luck :-(

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:
80/support/kb/articles/Q235/9/50.ASP&NoWebContent=1

and

http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00102.htm

One of the installed programs that creates the error when installing is
Adobe Encore- dunno what settings it changes but thats one of the proggies
that messes up the MCI controller.

Any suggestions anyone ?

System : Windows XP with Office XP

And that is the key, if it doesn't play properly in the MCI player there is
nothing PPT can do. The MCI player is very finicky about what it considers
to be an MPEG-1 file. Is you video compliant with the MPEG-1 format?
(Screen size, color depth, and data rate.)

Thanx for a fast reply Austin !

Guess I'm asking in the wrong group then if it's all MCI Player related. Any
suggestions on what group to post to ?
PP is the only program I know of using the MCI player and gives me a
headache :)
Anyway the video settings are as follows:

Basic MPEG-1 Audio/Video System Stream
25 fps PAL
Size 320x240 Dispaly ratio is 1.000
Bitrate is 1.8 Mbit/s
Audio MPEG Layer-2 16bit Stereo 44.100 kHz 224kbits/s

Should be nothing goofy about these settings that stops MS MCI Player from
handeling the file...

If it's not a huge video file, email me a copy and I'll take a look at it.

Two thoughts for you:

The video software used to generate the mpeg file might
have used a Quick Time mpeg codec and if QT is not on your
machine it wont play.
If you do not have Quick Time on your machine then
install the QT player and try again. Its a free download
from http://www.apple.com/quicktime/

If that dont work:
You say that the file can play on another machine but not
on your's, so there could well be some corruption
somewhere.

For the sake of only 30 mins of your time I would re-
format the hard drive, re-install windows re-install
power point and install QT for good measure. Only have
these on your machine to test that nothing else is
interfering with the mpeg playback.

If the video is going to play it will have a much better
chance on a clean instalation, with out any garbage on
your system.
