why is slide miniature greyed out? Is there a way to have miniatures of the
slides on
the pane on the left?
 
Really we need some more info eg What version of powerpoint, all or just one
presentation affected and exactly what you see in the left pane.

A stab in the dark though could you have the left pane set to outline view
(tab at the top will look like lines of text) if so click the other tab.

I am running powerpoint 2000. All presentations affected. I see just a small
page indicator in the left pane. In powerpoint 2003, there is a mimiature
version of the slide in the left hand pane. Is this possible in the 2000
version?

No, the Slide Miniature pane was introduced in later versions of PPT.
