I would like to create an 8.5" X 11" document, landscape layout, divided down
the middle to create 2 identical flyers to be chopped in half. This would not
be hard but I'd like to set a background (using a picture) on each half. When
I use the background feature it automaticall fills the whole page. How can I
make 2 documents with the same background photo, side-by-side, on 1 piece of
paper? Thank you.

You would be MUCH better off using another application like Office
Publisher.

You can create faux backgrounds -- just place two recatangles of 8.5" x 5.5"
inches next to each other -- and add the fill to the rectangle shapes --
make sure that these rectangles are placed behind other objects.

If you need to do this for many slides, you can place the two rectangles on
the slide master.
