Powerpoint error message

Steve Tingle

This is a re-post of an existing concern. This is an
update of all that I have done to correct it. I apoogize
if I'm not following the newsgroup rules by starting a
new thread.

Here's my Problem:

When opening certain PowerPoint (.ppt) files. PPT gives
this message: "PowerPoint has found an error that it
can't correct. You should save presentations, quit and
restart PowerPoint." This error happens no matter how I
try to open the file - FILE/OPEN in PPT or double
clicking on that file in Windows Explorer. I have tried
opening the files while in Safe Mode and still no luck. I
have been using these files for years, occasionally
updating them with new figures and new slides.

These same files will open on another machine running the
same version of PowerPoint. None of these files were
created on the machine that will not open them. About a
month ago, when this first happened, I simply re-named
them in Windows Explorer and they would open. Now, that
doesn't work.

The files will play in the PPT 2003 player that I
downloaded from MS site. But the .mpegs will not play in
that player and some of the .jpg's are reversed.

Here's what I have done.

All of the basics first: Re-installed office over the
existing Office. Then Uninstalled office and completely
re-installed. Downloaded all critical updates for both
windows and office. And did a complete virus scan. I have
a copy of Office XP Beta that I have installed and it
will open and play the files but the graphics
(mostly .jpgs) are reversed. Also, that version will not
upgrade so I have uninstalled it.

Based on searches at MS web page and from this newsgroup
I deleted the following registry files and let PPT repair
itself upon restarting.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0

I disabled the Office Plug-in in Norton AV 2003. I
deleted Adobe 5.0 since I saw there might be a conflict
with office (based on MS knowledge base), although I only
had the reader NOT the full program.

I also tried to rebuild the presentations. When inserting
the Mpegs I get the same error message. Once I got a
message saying that Quick Time was not installed
properly. So, I downloaded and installed the free version
of QuickTime6.3. The videos play fine in Windows Media
Player 9.

Here's my Vitals:
Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 1
Pentium 4 2.0GHz /256MB Ram /30GB HD w. 10GB free
PowerPoint Version 2000 SP-3(9.0.6620)

Any help is GREATLY appreciated!! I have a class to teach
in 2 weeks and MUST have this running.

Thanks,
Steve

I wish that I could tell you exactly what causing the
conflict but I can't. I just started deleting all of the
unnecessary programs from this machine and then
PowerPoint started to work again.

I had tons of things running in the backgound. Now, it
works. Thanks for all of your help.
