When starting PPT 2007 an error message opens: "Powerpoint can't load the
add-in" but it doesn't name the add-in. Anyone have this problem and a fix?

What add-ins are loaded?

Try Chirag's utility (at the bottom of this page) to find out what add-ins are
loading at PPT startup.

Earlier versions simply shrug and move along when they can't find a requested
add-in file (ie, the registry tells PPT to load the add-in at start up but the
add-in file's missing). 2007 bellyaches about it.

Thank you. However, There is no access to the inactive add-ins. Just a list
of them. ...

Thank you. I ran the utility and noticed it didn't list things for ppt
2007...just older versions.

Awww, shoot.

Then in response to your reply to Shyam, which add-ins are listed as inactive?

The "Inactive Application Add-ins" are:
1. Custom XML Data
2. Invisible On-Slide Content
3. Off-Slide Content
4. Presentation Notes

There is no place to actually interact with these non-functional add ins.
They are just listed, but you cannot seem to access them.

thanks for the help...

They're all add-ins supplied with Office so shouldn't be causing any problems.
I think we can ignore them for the moment.

How do you feel about poking in the registry a bit?
If you're not ok with it, don't go there.

But otherwise, have a look at:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\PowerPoint\AddIns

Open that and see if there are any addins listed underneath it.

Do the same for
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\PowerPoint\AddIns

Hello Steve, Thanks for the info...I looked at the registry.
A. Under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\PowerPoint\AddIns

There are the (as far as I know) functioning Add-ins. These are all in
folders with the following files:
1: folder: DVZPPTAddin (A dataViz addin I believe for Documents to Go)
files: (Default); AutoLoad; Path
2: folder: HOW (Hand Out Wizzard's addin to create hand outs for classrooms)
files: (Default); AutoLoad; Path
3. mspan (I don't know what this folder is...)
files (Default); AutoLoad; Path

Under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\PowerPoint\AddIns
There is one folder: DLL Addins with one file: (Default)

I didn't see anything useful there....do you?
thanks friend...

Hello Steve, Thanks for the info...I looked at the registry.
A. Under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\PowerPoint\AddIns

files: (Default); AutoLoad; Path
3. mspan (I don't know what this folder is...)
files (Default); AutoLoad; Path

When you look at the Path value for each of these, does it point to a valid file?
If not, that'd probably be the problem.

Another thing to try: look at the AutoLoad value for each. If it's Hex FFFFFFF, PPT
will try to load the add-in at startup. You could try changing that to 0 (with PPT
shut down) then restarting PPT to see if you get yelled at again.
