Hi,

Following upgrading my Tablet PC to XP SP2 Powerpoint
2003 has stopped working correctly, when trying to resize
a page element or move an element across the page or use
the mouse to select a number of objects the application
closes without any error.

When I uninstall XP SP2, Powerpoint 2003 works correctly
again.

Has anyone else experienced this and found a resolution ?

TIA
JS

A few of us here are experiencing the same issue. We're
all using Tablet PCs.

We've tried office SP1 but the issue remains. Would love
to have a resolution.

I'd first try this:

How to set graphics hardware acceleration back

That will help to isolate the problem if it's due to a faulty video driver or
hardware.

I'm having the exact same problem on my IBM Thinkpad T42. I upgraded to
Office 2003 and same problem. I can't get any work done - this is driving
me nuts. Please advise!

We are also experiencing this - reducing hardware acceleration doesn't help.
Uninstalling SP2 to try that

Steve, this helps, indeed. Without XP SP2 Powerpoint 2003 works like a
charm ;-)

I've reported this to Microsoft and am looking for a KB article about it.
Anyone know of one?

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the Critical
Update or Service Pack 1 for Office 2003 as soon as possible. From
PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for Updates".]

[TOP ISSUE - Are you having difficulty opening presentations in PowerPoint
that you just created (you can save, but not open)? -

This might be related to a known issue that occurs when Bluetooth is
enabled on some tablet PC's

If your TabletPC has Bluetooth installed/enabled, try uninstalling
Bluetooth feature.

John, I don't think so. I'm using IBM T42 with Bluetooth. With XP SP2
exactly same symptom, without XP SP2 Powerpoint 2003 works like a charm.
Office 2003 SP1 doesn't make any difference, this problem seems to be XP
SP2 related.

- Tomi

Hi Tomi,

That's exactly the scenario that I was trying to confirm.

Scenario: On SOME (not all) Tablet PC's, when Bluetooth is enabled and
Windows XP SP-2 is installed, PowerPoint 2003 will become unusable.
Workarounds include either disabling Bluetooth capability or, not
recommended, removing Windows XP SP-2.

Service Pack level of PowerPoint/Office makes no difference. The problem is
definitely related to Windows XP SP-2.

For customers where the symptom is an application crash, forget to send in
the crash report when prompted by Office. The more people that send in
crash reports the higher a priority it becomes to investigate (attempt to
recreate the problem internally) so that the root cause can be determined
and, eventually, a fix delivered.

If you want to expedite matters, you can also send a system information
report directly by doing the following:

1) Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System tools -> System
information
2) File -> Export
3) Enter file name for report (it's just a text file) and click "Save"
4) Attach report to e-mail message (subject line beginning with
"NEWSGROUP:" and send to the following e-mail address (after unscrambling)

That'd be "DON'T forget to send in ..." I think. ;-)

Steve - this is not the case with us though, there's no bluetooth in our
laptops. Dell Lattitude D600 and D400's.

All the more reason to send in the application crash report when asked.

John,

as mentioned I never got any error button when Powerpoint 2003 crashes,
it just disappears.

But I figured out the answer ;-) To be honest I don't know is this good
news or bad ;-) After all it seems to be the combination of Cisco
Security Agent V4.0-2 build 627 and XP SP2 which are causing Powerpoint
2003 to crash. I just started testing w/o different background
processes and I was lucky, this was the first one....

So without XP SP2 or without Cisco Security Agent running Powerpoint
2003 is fine. Both enabled at the same time causes Powerpoint 2003 to
crash.

So if you just suspend the security on Cisco agent before using
Powerpoint 2003 you are fine, even with XP SP2 installed.

Just let me know if you need more information.

Hi Tomi,

Thanks for doing some additional troubleshooting.

Do you happen to know what version of Cisco Security Agent you are running.

Perhaps, with it running, you could also send me a System Information
report. With all of that information we might be able to reproduce this
internally in our testing labs and, if we can repro this in the lab we can
determine whether or not this is something that should be addressed from
our end.

To generate a system information report do the following:

1) Start -> All Programs -> Accessores -> System Tools -> System Information
2) File -> Export ... <enter filename for report>
3) Click "Save"

Attach resulting report (a *.txt file) in e-mail with Subject: line
beginning with "NEWSGROUP: " and send it to me (after unscrambling e-mail)

John, the version I'm running is Cisco Security Agent V4.0-2 build 627.

Do you want the information when Powerpoint crashes (when security
enabled) or when it doesn't (security suspended) ?

And your email: (e-mail address removed) with subject beginning with
NEWSGROUP: ?

We have discovered that there are several newer versions of the csauser.dll
available. Yours was 4.0.2.627. Newer versions include: 4.0.3.720;
4.0.3.717 and 4.5.0.265.

You might check with Cisco to see if one of those newer versions is
compatible with your version of ACS and available for download. If you find
one that can be enabled without causing PowerPoint to exit prematurely, let
us know.

I was just checking to see if anyone confirmed one of the new versions (CSA
agent) corrected the issue? We have the EXACT same problem (using CSA 4.0.1
Build 540) and can replicate issue just as Tomi described.

Thanks

Cisco is investigating this for Microsoft. They have asked that we gather
the following information from customers experiencing the problem. If you
(or anyone else experiencing the problem) want to assist in this effort,
please send the following to me at (scrambled e-mail address):

Answer following questions:
1) What version of PowerPoint 2003 is being used (from Help -> About...
dialog)?
2) What is the version of Cisco Security Agent (CSA) being used (in your
case, you've already provided the information)?
3) Does the problem occur when using CSA in test mode?

Attach following files:
