PowerPoint 2002 excruciatingly slow

Just bought PP 2002 to prepare for big presentation. Put
it on my Pentium 4 w/256 meg running Windows XP. It took
about 2-3 seconds from the time I typed a letter for it to
appear on the screen. I had downloaded Japanese language
support so I thought this was the culprit and I needed
more memory. So I upped the memory to 512 meg. No change.
I deleted the printer drivers and Norton AAntivirus. No
change. Meanwhile the Word XP I bought several months
before still runs fast.

I rebooted in safe mode and PP is fast.

Any ideas?
