Power Supply Problem?

I am currently in the process of moving all the components from my
Gateway 300SE Special, into a computer case I purchased on eBay.

Before I installed the motherboard, I plugged in the Power Supply, and
I heard the fan whirring. I then installed the motherboard, RAM, PCI
Cards, CPU, and CD/Hard Drives.
I tried plugging the computer back in, and I got nothing, couldn't see
or hear any fan. I unplugged all the plugs from the Power Supply, and
tried running it again, to no avail.
I am positive that my electrical outlet, and my cord work well. I tried
the computer plugged into multiple outlets, and yet, I still heard
nothing. This power supply was new, and it was working fine before I
installed the computer. The old computer had no problems whatsoever
with the power supply. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

The PS should not be able to run at all unless it is connected to the mb in
the first place or you manually short two connectors on it and even then it
might not start without having a load on it.
The fact that you purposely or accidentally plugged the thing in and you
heard it running is not a good sign. However, you say later in the
description of your problem that the power supply was running fine. How
would you know that, especially since from what you have said, you actually
never had your system running with it? My best suggestion at this point is
to take your mb and put it back into your old box and see if it runs. If it
does then probability is that the new PS is at fault.

Hardware from Gateway,Dell etc. is not always compatible with other
hardware.Especially power supplies and motherboards.

I'm not going to mess around with it anymore, I had it running, and I
got the power supply working, but I saw a flame inside the PS. I
unplugged it, and I'm not fooling around with it anymore. Its going to
my computer store. Hopefully, the flame didn't screw up my HD,
motherboard...or something...
