Clueless in PC Land

I have tried to find an answer to this problem but still
remain clueless. Ever since I download SP2 and had a bios
update the PC will not power up properly. What happens is
when you turn the power strip on the pc acts like it is
booting up for about 4 seconds and then goes off. The
lights blink and acts just like you pressed the power on
button when you didn't. Why is it doing this. Before
when you turned the power strip on it wouldn't do anyting
until you pushed the power on button. The machine is an
IBM - I can't find any IBM discussion forums to ask about
this problem. Has anyone else experienced this? It is
really annoying and I'm concerned it is damaging my
machine. Please help - I am clueless in PC land!

How about giving the good folks at IBM a call? Never use a power strip to
turn your system on and off. Always shut down your system the way it was
meant to be, by choosing Start>Turn Off Computer.

You turn on your PC via the power strip? What happens if you use the power
button on the tower instead?

The BIOS will regard the power strip turn off as a loss of power. There are
settings for what the system should do in those cases: shutdown, restart,
etc. There is also a question of load. How many things are plugged into
that power strip? Can it support the initial drain of power when everything
turns on at once?

You want good clean power going to the cpu, memory and hard drives. I use a
UPS between the tower and the outlet. Use the power button to turn off.
After having seen a system fry during a brownout, I set BIOS to shut off
the system when there is power failure and power returns.

Unless you use the correct procedure for power down on your computer, you
will always have problems.. why do you use the power strip to turn it off?
