Power Point 2007 - Capabilities

Power Point 2007

Presentations in modern times require;
-shows in aspect ratios up to 3:1, normally 1.78:1 (16:9)
-slides with static content.
-animated slides and full animation.
-live and pre edited video
-even 3D effects
-7.1 surround theatre sound support
-multi screen support.

Does new Power Point 2007 support all these content types
in a single Presentation.

Has Power Point basically developed into a nonlinear video
editor (NLE) or does the video content need to be edited
separately in (Vista) Windows Movie Maker, and animation
created externally.

PPT 2007 isn't radically different from PPT 2003. You still get the same
animation that you got in 2003. That means videos are external. If you
want animations and the built in features aren't enough, you need an
external editor as well.
-shows in aspect ratios up to 3:1, normally 1.78:1 (16:9)
You can of course adjust the resolution, which (depending on the
resolution) gives you different aspect ratios.
-slides with static content. Yes.

-animated slides and full animation.
-live and pre edited video
See my comment above.
-even 3D effects
PPT 2007 comes with a brand new graphics engine that allows a lot of 3d
stuff for shapes, etc. Not sure if that satisfies the kind of 3d effects
you are looking for.
-7.1 surround theatre sound support
Sound is brought in by external sound files. So if your system supports
7.1 surround sound and the sound files are 7.1 surround sound files,
then PPT supports it.
-multi screen support.
You mean show the presentation stretched across multiple screens? I
don't think so. You can of course show the presentation on one screen
(beamer) and have a special presenter view that shows which slide is
next on the other (laptop).

Does new Power Point 2007 support all these content types
in a single Presentation.
Yes with additional external files and appropriately installed OS
support for those media types, sound requirements, etc.

separately in (Vista) Windows Movie Maker, and animation
created externally.
See above.

Thank you very much for your detailed reply.

Multiscreen, both in presentation and during composition.

Presentation.
When the show is presented, its shown on say 3 or 4
screens at the same time, but what appears on each
seperate screen is choreographed and in sequence to
create a total single show even although its physically on 4
screens. So say at any instant in time whats on each screen
is different or even the same for effect to present a story.

The presentations on each screen all run on the same
timeline. One laptop and one power point type application
runs all 4 presentation screens (4 AV-outs on the laptop) at
the same time with 4 operator preview windows on the
laptop.

Composing.
The multi screen presentation is composed on a single
timeline, on a single laptop, running one power point type
application. For a 4 screen presentation you would work
with 4 screens in the application when composing including
running test previews, kind a like a professional broadcast
NLE only with added windowed screens. The idea being to
compose and preview in all 4 windowed screens at the
same time on a single timeline.

For example old method used to be to have 4 laptops, 4
projectors, and hope they all run in sync, but now a days a
single laptop can run all 4 screens and they are mastered
(composed) on the single application on a single laptop, so
sync is perfect always, it is not 4 seperate ppt shows but a
single 4 screen ppt show.

I don't think PPT 2007 supports anything like this, but I could be
wrong.
Maybe someone else knows more about this topic?

Thank you Patrick and Chirag for your comments.

Great links Chirag, thanks.

With Multi screens you can do all sort of fancy things, like
having an onscreen presenter (video) and he walks from left
to right, out of the left hand screen to the centre screen then
on to the right hand screen, great fun, all about retaining your
audiences attention, and making them turn their heads, and
no sore necks !

If you want an audience sing-a-long, you can have 3 screens
say, each tinted, blue, red, yellow, say, with different lyrics on
each screen, then divide the audience into three sections to
sing-a-long to their respective lyrics on "their" screen, great
fun.

Also with multi screens you can leave static screens up
longer if the audience needs to make notes, while the
presentation continues on the other screens. If you wish to
show detail of a car transmission, or something this can be
put up and zoomed on one screen while the other screens
display other content or explanations, etc.

In a word multi screens are the way to go !

Patrick I think you are correct Power Point 2007 is really not
geared up for composing multiscreen presentations yet,
maybe by 2020 -:) LOL.

You should download Office 2007 on a non-production machine and install
it. Then when it's open, use the send-a-smile tool (just google the term
and pick the entry with Jensen Harris) and send MS feedback on this.
This will go directly to the beta team. They will not look at it for
2007, but immediately after 2007 is done, they'll sit down and plan what
features to include in the following version.
