Power Point 2003 - Custom Animation locked out on task pane.

In Power Point 2003 - When I try to use the custom animation in the task pane
it is locked out or faded and cannot be accessed. When I right click on the
areas that I want to animate a box comes up in the center of the screen so
that I can assign an annimation to the box but I don't have access the the
task pane so that I can move around each item on the slide & set the timing
or highlight a particular text item to change. Please help!

Do you have the new animation features disabled? Go to Tools > Options.
Look at the Edit tab. See if there are any check marks at the bottom
below "Disable new features." Try unchecking them and let us know if that
works.

In addition to David's suggestion (which sounds more like what's happening,
I think), you could be using animation schemes. Those place the animations
on the master slides, and you'd need to move them to the actual slide before
you can change them. http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00515.htm explains
it better.
