power loss, how do retrieve lost data from excel?

If the file was never saved, there is nothing to retrieve. Your question
is a little sparse on specifics about what the problem is.
 
My memory's rusty on this issue, but doesn't Excel create a temp file,
something like the original file name but with a $ sign at the beginning, or
is that Word? Or neither and I need more coffee.
 
Yes there are temp files, the issue is the lack of specifics of what
data was lost.
