It depends on whether it uses 2.5" drives or 3.5" drives. A
3.5" drive can draw 12W idling, and close to 30W for the first
10 seconds. There are 2.5" drives whose power footprint stays
under 2.5W while operating, and the 2.5" is the type that
can be run from USB bus power. For a 3.5", you'd want an adapter,
or AC power conversion inside the enclosure.
Not all the 2.5" drives ever made, were winners in the power
department. There are some, that can benefit from using a
USB cable with two heads on it. It is a matter of how well
they stay below the 5V @ 500mA limit, as to whether a single
USB cable will do the job well.
