This beast, with 2 USB ports (A-B) in its cable, draws a lot of power. I
found that most older PCs just can't power it. So I plan to buy a DC
power adaptor for it, as this beast has a DC in!

What approximate voltage & current should I look for?

You also need to look at plug measures and polarity.

The first place to look is incidentially the device itself,
as most state their voltage and cuttent ratings on the product label.

What the device says it needs.

Or just get a much better 250GB external drive, the best of them dont need anything special power wise.

I am unable to find relevant information from Hitachi's website.

Well, don't wanna waste it. :)

Maybe I should just shell out some more money to buy a powered USB hub...

If you can get something to tell you what drive is inside, the drive info will be in the drive datasheet.

Add a bit for the bridge, but that will usually be covered by the next rounding up on the current.

Probably easier and a lot less risk of getting it wring and
killing the drive...

I see you have already received an answer from Hitachi, but a USB
Y-cable would have suggested a power requirement of 2 x 500mA @ 5V.

This is because a standard USB port is current limited to 500mA.

You could have determined the polarity by testing for continuity
between the USB ground pin and each of the terminals at the DC socket.
