I have been finding the above error message on my computer for about a week
now. The computer freezes and this error appears in a DOS screem. It also
says "1762 configuration change has occured".
I have found out that this is an RPC error "Name serivce unavailable".
I have also notice that when the computer starts I nolonger have the screen
that requests you to click on your name in a box befor opening into windows.
It would sounc like this is related.
I am on a home computer [IBM intellistation] running Windows XP.
Can anyone help?

This does not seem to be a Windows problem but some issue with the
BIOS and the hardware management. I would check the hardware of this
machine and if you changed the hardware configuration, unplug the new
device and see if this helps.

Thanks for the response TM. I have not installed anything in the last 6
months. So I doubt that it has anything to do with that.
This problem just raised its ugly head within the last wek. I can resolve
it only by shutting the machine down and then rebooting.
I find it at odd times, usually after the comoputer has been idle for a long
time.

This "seems" to indicate a "classic" BIOS set-up change error. The
computer's BIOS/CMOS battery, used to keep the configuration when no AC
power, may be becoming too weak to store the configuration. Did you notice
a date/time change, when you powered the PC on, before this???

BBUNNY,
This is exactly what I am experiencing also.
In answer to the previous post from Yves. I have no error in my time or
date shown on the computer.
Bunny and I are still looking for a solution!!

Mmore infromation. I just talked to a computer geek and he tells me the
following. The service pack 2 and subsequent updates have eliminatid the
page where you click your name to sign on if you are a single user.
The problem with the DOS messages is a Mother board imminent failure. I
don't know if this is all correct or if he is just trying to talk me into a
new machine.

Take your machine to a different computer professional. Do not take it
to a BestBuy or CompUSA type of store. The information about the login
screen you got - if you are reporting what the tech said correctly - is
not true. As for the "DOS" messages - unlikely it is DOS since there is
no DOS in XP - it is really hard to tell what is going on from your
post. You would be far better off to take the machine to someone who
can fix it. If you are uncomfortable with the first person you went to,
ask friends and colleagues for the name of someone else.

Malke,
If I have lost the "welcome screen" and it is not a result of the Service
pack 2 or another update, what is the problem? I believe you are correct
about the service pack 2 since I downloaded it in Sept and this is the first
that the Welcome Screen has not shown up. However I have had a couple of
updates since then.
The other problem IS a DOS screen message, it is not in Windows. I have a
blank background with a blue box with the error message within. Shutting down
adn rebooting gets me back up an running.
I do plan on consulting another service but thought I could get some good
information here. Thanks for you response.
Anyont else out there got any ideas?

What do you get instead? What do you want to get? Are you now having to
login? If so, do:

Start>Run control userpasswords2 [enter]

Uncheck the box that says "users must enter a user name and
password...". If you want XP to automatically open in one particular
account instead of presenting you with the Welcome Screen and various
account icons, you can set this option there.

When *exactly* in the bootup process does this error occur? If occurs
when you first start the machine and *before* Windows loads, that is
not DOS. That is a message from your computer's BIOS indicating a
hardware problem. The precise meaning of the error message depends on
the make/model of the computer and/or the motherboard (if not an OEM
machine like HP, Compaq, IBM, etc.). If the computer is freezing at
that point, you have hardware failure. Either contact the OEM tech
support if you have that sort of machine or take the machine to a good
professional. You need to get that sorted out before messing around
with Windows at this point.

Thanks again for hanging with this.
the screen I get when I boot up is simply the wallpaper with the desktom
icons on top. the sam thing I used to get after clicking my icon on the
"welcome screen". The sustem is simply skipping the welcome screen and going
directly to the desktop.
I am using a used IBM Intellistation. I'VE been using it for about 3 years.
The Windows XP was put on by the store where I bought the software. He did
a few othe things while he had it. So it has been renning fine since.

As to thte other deal. I don't know when in the boot sequence this happens
because I have never observed it happening. I leave my machine on 24hr and
find this when I come to the machine in the morning. This has happened 4
times. I also went to the machine at about 8:00PM EST one evening and found
it. I can't say for certain that we did not have a power outage but I have
seen no other evidence of it. No clocks or tape players blinking as if there
has been a power outage.

Check on IBM's site for tech support for this computer for the error
message. It certainly sounds like a hardware issue.

Good luck,

Malke
