Is it possible to simply password-protect a folder in XP Home so my kids
can't open it?

I heard this is easy with XP Pro but I'm only working with Home Editition.

Thanks!

Ed

Not really - Children are very resourceful. Most can't find a Dirty
Clothes hamper, but can unlock most any block you put on a PC.
A shared "Family PC" is open season - when all the users have a
Administrative account.

For sensitive Financial data, etc, I would put it on a USB thumb
drive and not even store the data permanently on the physical disk
drive. But the data should be burned to CD/DVD disks on a regular
basis as the USB thumb drives are semi-volatile.

There are encryption apps that you can use to lock the data. The
problem there is a loss of the key or code that could render the
data unrecoverable even to the owner.

The best solution is a separate PC for the kids. I know it's costly,
but as they age you'll be faced with that eventually.

Hi,

No, not without third party programs. If you keep the files under your
profile, you can make them private, but that's about it. If the kids have
access to an admin level account, then there is nothing you will be able to
do to prevent them from taking ownership of the files even if locked.
