possible service/game conflict?

i picked up civ3 gold. it crashed at the splash screen.
after multiple attempts at obvious fixes (uninstalling
and reinstalling video/sound card drivers, flashing bios,
uninstalling and reinstalling civ3, etcetc) i finally
found a workaround.

if i run msconfig and startup with everything but 'plug
and play' checked, the game runs fine (albeit without
sound).

any ideas as to what may be causing this?

Hi Ron,

Since it's working but without sound, how about disabling
your sound device in System Properties / Hardware /
Device Manager. That will help troubleshoot the issue. :)
