possible moribund hd

could anyone confirm my fears?

ive recently started getting amongst others these stop messages:
oxo~24 etc (if u want the rest just ask) ntfs.sys error
not_lessorequal page fault in non page area

i tried a restore to no avail. i then defragmented my drives c and d and
increased c as it was just about full.
ive tried doing a chkdsk but when the pc restarts, it doesnt do it. i also
ran spyware and tried mcafee but i keep getting these two errors:
mcafee html dialogue error
nt onaccess scanner service error

ive also tried using my xp disc to get to the recovery console but as it get
there i get this error:

stop d1 0x0etc4 02 0xr76f8326 usbport.sys

is it hardware? software? i dont know!!!

any help would be massively appreciated

Do you have backups for your important files, or can you make them?

i have an old ghost image on 11 dvd's, but the partition size is different
to what i have now, so wasnt sure if to use them or not.

What activities are you still able to do with your computer, if any?
Can you do a System Restore?
Start / Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore

the system restore was the first thing i did, unfortunately it didnt make a
difference

I would probably go to a shop for troubleshooting.
BUT...If you can download and make a diagnostic disk from your HD
manufacturer's website (on another computer, perhaps?) you could try to run
that. Or go to the Seagate website and download Seatools, which works for
any make of HD. That is what I did.Seatools is a good thing to have at hand
even if things are normal, just to check up.
