Possible damaged links to other files

I have several files which are linked.
If the source file is not open and I Update links when
opening the second file garbage appears in the cells which
are linked to the source file.
As soon as I open the source file the garbage is replaced
by the correct data.
Can anyone shed some light on this issue and possible
solutions?

I forgot to mention that only some of the cells are
affected this way. The rest behave as expected.

I've never seen garbage show up.

What do you mean? An error (Ref!, #n/a) or some value that isn't close to what
you expect.
