I have a computer running Windows XP Media Center edition and I installed an
external TV tuner. Recently when I try to go into the My Music folder the
folder will show up along with a Microsoft crash message "Windows Explorer
has encountered a problem and needs to close..." When I click on Send Error
Report or Don't Send the screen goes blank for a few seconds and then the
screen reappears.
So, I uninstalled the TV tuner program to see if that's the culprit and it
did not work. I try to go into My Music again and I get the same error
message described above. The error message points to the xvid.dll file,
which I am thinking it is corrupt. I go into the Hardware tab of the Sounds
and Audio Devices Properties in the Control Panel to attempt to uninstall the
xvid.dll file but I could not as it was a system file in the Windows\System32
folder (it contains two xvid files, xvid.dll and xvid.ax).
Should I restore the xvid.dll file from backup media such as the recovery
partition? I know there are third-party sites related to xvid.dll but I
don't want to download any fixes from these sites. Any help would be greatly
appreciated - thanks!
