Possable Damage to CPU ?

I recently had some problems with my computer not booting up when I turned it
on, so I swaped a few parts in and out until I found that I had a faulty
stick off ram. When i removed the CPU fan/heat sink it pulled the cpu out off
its socket while the cpu socket lever was still in the lown and locked
possition. I've since put the cpu and related parts back on the motherboard
and everything works fine now that i've replaced the ram. Does removing the
cpu like that cause any type off damage to it ?

i'd guess it 'could' but you got lucky but the fact it still works means
you're ok and did no harm. I wouldn't make it a habit.

The likelihood of getting zapped from static electricity or some curent
obviously is much higher... I know a guy who will unplug IDE drives & such
while the machine is running (only when he has to). He said so far it's
never caused any damage.

Hello,
Did it come off easy or did you really have to pull on it?
I have installed/replaced a load of cpu's and never ancountered something
like this. But anyway, I don't think that it would cause serious damage the
lever usually is only for fixing the cpu in the socket and providing contact
with the pin on the cpu. The pins on the cpu probably got streched but as
long as they are not broken or bent it should not cause a problem. I still
would not recommend to do that a few times. Would you post Make and Model of
the board just so I can avoid buying it.

Thanks,
Chris

Its unlikely that you will come across this motherboard, its an old asus
p4s333/c which is a bit old, the cpu is an intel celeron 2.4ghz. By the way
everytime the pc boots up it showed an error message "bios udpate data
incorrect cpuid=00000F29" I've updated the motherboard bios to the latest
beta version from asus and it fixed the problem. A tech guy at asus said its
because i'm using a modern intel celeron cpu with an older board.
Since i've updated the bios the message has gone away. I've rebooted the
machine 11 times now and once when I turned on the machine the post did not
start. when i powered down and started up again the system booted into the
bios cpu config screen with a message saying that the computer failed to boot
last time because of an incorrect cpu setting.

I should say that this was happening from time to time in the past, and has
only happened once in the 11 reboots since updating the bios.
