Ports not showing up in device manager

I've been having a LOT of problems with a users computer in that I couldn't
get their printer working. I tried different cables etc... On another KB
article I did some other troubleshooting steps I came to a step where I was
supposed to delete the port out of device manager.

The ports (COM + LPT) aren't showing up in the device manager. Now after
reformatting the hard drive and re-installing all programs, I'm back to
square one, and I've even tried a different printer. Still the ports aren't
showing up in the device manager. There's nothing showing up under a ? or an
! as having a problem. Would you say that this might indicate that the REAL
problem is the hardware of the computer itself?

After installing Windows XP did you load the drivers for the Motherboard
hardware?

Maybe they are disabled in the BIOS. I disabled my serial port and lpt
printer port because I have no need for them, and they do not show in
device manager anymore. FWIW
